Misstrance-lation

The biggest deep sea exploration news in 50 years?

James Cameron (yes, that James Cameron) is putting his massive piles of money where his adventurer mouth is. He is the pilot and sponsor of a team aiming to reach the deepest point on Earth for the first time in over 50 years, the Mariana Trench’s Challenger Deep. He’ll make the dive within weeks.

They’ve constructed a one-man submersible called DEEPSEA CHALLENGER that resembles an upright pill capsule, a thick steel shell around a single-man spherical cockpit. Cameron will be the pilot and sole occupant, bolted inside the craft as it descends nearly seven miles to the floor of the trench (deeper than Mt. Everest is tall).

Along the way, an 8-foot array of LEDs will help him scan the trench for life forms that can withstand the 8 tons per square inch of pressure at these depths.

Just what you’d expect from the guy behind The Abyss. Your move, Michael Bay.

BONUS: The Deep Sea Challenge website is super fun to play around on, give it a whirl!

Always been fascinated by this, wish I could go have an explore o self!
